Writer’s Tip to Write Faster: Time Management For Authors

Do you need a tip to help you write faster?

How about a tip that helps you research and write faster?

Getting writing time is hard. I get it. The one thing that I dream about is writing faster each day, without distractions. Though I know I cannot control how fast my brain works with my fingers as they type, the one thing I can control is distractions.

Today, I am going to share with you one of my tips for writing faster. This tip is so useful, you can not only use it for writing time, but research time, marketing time, or any task that requires your uninterrupted attention.

Over the last two decades, I have worked with hundreds of students regarding time-management and how those students can carve out enough time in their busy days to achieve their goals of graduating with degrees. From those hundreds of teaching sessions, I have adopted this time-management technique with my writing and research time.

Pockets of Time: I call these pockets of time writing sessions or research sessions. Here is how it works.

  • I first start with a calendar. I live and breathe by my calendar. Therefore, I set up blocks of time around my already scheduled meetings. I will block those times on my calendar as “writing time” or “research time.”

  • When those blocks come up, I handle them as I would any other professional meeting. I give it my undivided attention (shut off social media, silence my phone, and use web blockers to stop me from surviving the web.)

  • Then I get to work for that block of time. Once the time runs out, if I did not get everything I wished to get done for that session, I go onto my calendar to set another session in a few days for follow up.

I get that this sounds basic, but for me, I had to give my writing and research time their own dedicated blocks on my calendar, otherwise, my good intentions would never materialize.

You may be asking how I avoid researching or searching on the web during my writing time. That is a great question. Here is a short video I created giving tips about how to structure a “research session.”

I have created this free tips sheet for you. Access it now and get started on your research sessions to help you write faster.
